We offer an MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre . The three-year MFA program runs concurrently with our one-year certificate-granting Professional Training Program (PTP). Both are in session from October till mid-June.
In this foundational training, students undertake a rigorous course of study that is investigative, experiential, and that continuously challenges the student to play ferociously with conviction. The role of the School is to be a provocateur (pro-voce: for the voice), to assist the student in finding their own point of view for the theatre.
The work of the student is based on a triad of observation, skill, and imagination. Physical training is based on the investigations of the body and its capabilities—strength, endurance, flexibility, agility, and balance—the pursuit of body knowledge or physical thought, and movement in space/time as the fundamental basis for a dynamic theatre. Acting and devising are taught through the study of Commedia, Melodrama and Clown. The single most important attribute for the student of the PTP is curiosity
We train actors to be responsive and spontaneous with their imaginations, their minds and their bodies. We take the actor beyond the role of interpreter of a director's vision or playwright's words (the Actor/Interpreter); at Dell'Arte, the actor is fundamental to the creation of theatre (the Actor/Creator). We train actors to make Devised Theatre, week by week.
"My Great Compelling is to create work for the theatre that becomes more than the ordinary comedies and tragedies of our lives... for a theatre capable of plunging people into a more profound reality than this world offers... meaning a dimensional reality, a poetic realm that includes Hope. Hope, not of platitudes and anecdotal situations, but Hope evidenced by the profound scope of vision, and intent to manifest/realize, through the transformational actor, a Character that demonstrates the fierce passion to engage the act of life in the Metaphysical Space of the stage."

in an email to former School Director Joan Schirle
There is a dialogue happening at Dell'Arte International, that isn't happening anywhere else. A dialogue that has been on-going for 30 years and is now codified into the only Master of Fine Arts in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre in the United States. We have developed an approach to actor-training that is built on 30 years of research while training passionate performers from around the world. Our school exists side by side with the Dell'Arte Company, a physical theatre company that has been at the forefront of the ensemble movement for three decades.
The Professional Training Program (PTP) is open to all performers, with or without a college degree, who are committed to acquiring the approach, education and skills needed to move forward as actor-creators. U.S. and international students are encouraged to apply. The PTP runs concurently with the first year of our MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre, therefore qualified students who have finished the PTP may apply for matriculation into the second year of the MFA program which includes a summer make-up course. Come join the dialogue and make a mark.
