Position: Managing Director
Term: Full-time, beginning July 1, 2014
Our programs:
The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre
The Dell’Arte Company
The Mad River Festival
Blue Lake ArtPlace
Seasonal Schedule:
Our fiscal year runs October 1 – September 30. Our academic year starts mid-September and
runs through mid-June each year. The school runs a three-year MFA program in Ensemble-
Based Physical Theatre during that time-frame. Concurrently, we run a one-year certificate
program called the Professional Training Program (PTP). Students for these programs come
from all over the world and United States. Our annual Holiday Show takes place in November-
December each year and tours regionally in the Pacific Northwest. Our production calendar
runs at a fast pace throughout the year with a mix of student, community, company and festival
productions. Our annual Mad River Festival runs from mid-June through the beginning of
August.
About the position:
The Managing Director will work in conjunction with our board of directors and HUB
(ensemble of Artistic Directors) as well as the staff to make sure all programs of the
organization flourish.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:
• Financial review and oversight in coordination with CFO to project and reach financial
goals for the long-term health and development of the organization
• Management oversight for marketing, development, community programs, office
administration, school administration, and all other areas pertaining to the strategic
development of the organization
• Human resources oversight including staff evaluations and development, HR policies
and procedures, and HR compliance
• Board development and coordination
• Donor development and outreach
• Community outreach and representation
• Ensuring compliance with regulatory and oversight agencies
We are an ensemble-run organization, which means that although we all have specific
responsibility sets, all members of the organization take responsibility for the whole. We
currently have a full-time staff of 13, a regular part-time staff of 5, and a seasonal staff of 30-
plus. In addition to the artistic directors (Producing Artistic Director, Founding Artistic Director,
School Director), we have a fulltime CFO, School Administrator, Marketing Director, and
Development Associate/Community Liaison.
Qualifications and attributes sought:
• management experience
• theatre or related nonprofit administration experience
• knowledge of the national theatre field
• ability to exhibit strong leadership
• strong communication skills
• strong organizational skills
• ability to engage in collaborative decision-making processes
• ability to read financial statements and audit documents
• ability to delegate and manage work-flows
• ability to engage in big-picture thinking
• ability to set and manage priorities
• ability to work with students, interns, designers, directors, actors, audience, donors, staff
• strong knowledge of Word and Excel
• knowledge of or willingness to learn Salesforce
Compensation and benefits:
Salary to be discussed upon application or expression of interest. Benefits include four weeks
of paid vacation time in addition to observed paid holidays, healthcare reimbursement program,
worker’s comp, and contributions into social security, medicare, and unemployment insurance.
